Deputy Chief Peter Sloly
Toronto Police Deputy Chief Peter Sloly says he loves this city and denies reports that he has tossed his hat into the ring to become Ottawa’s next police chief.

The top job at the Ottawa Police Service was left vacant after Chief Vern

White accepted an appointment to the Senate.

“I am a Toronto boy and I love it here,” Sloly said. “My family is

here and our home is here.”

He said reports that he has applied for the Ottawa job are “inaccurate.” The

rumours have had many front-line officers speculating about his possible

successors.

White, who has been Chief of Ottawa police since May 2007, begins his tenure in the Senate on Monday. Ottawa Police Services Board chair Eli El-Chantiry said his officials are searching inside the force for a successor.

“We are confident that the next police chief for the City of Ottawa can be

found within the organization,” El-Chantiry said.

Sloly, who is the highest-ranking black officer in the Toronto force, is in charge of Divisional Policing Command (DPC) which has 4,084 officers, 221 civilian members and a budget of $447 million.
