A big donation was made to Habitat for Humanity in Saskatoon this week.

Federated Co-op dropped off $750,000 in hardware and building supplies.

The materials will be shared across Western Canada, used to build new homes and sold at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Christina Bungabong is part of the program and will also be receiving keys to a home next month, along with an interest free loan.

“This is a dream come true, it’s real affordable houses for low income families,” said Bungabong. She and her husband and two daughters are the first Filipino family to receive a home in Saskatoon.

They moved to Canada four years ago and never dreamed this day would come.  Right now, they are living in an apartment where their two young daughters share a bedroom.

Bungabong says a friend told them to apply with Habitat for Humanity and after several meetings the Bungabongs received a letter in the mail saying they had been chosen to receive a brand new home.

“Really happy and we’re so thankful for Humanity helping other families to own a house,” said Bungabong.

It was hard to find time between work and raising young children, but they managed to complete the 500 hours of volunteer work the program requires.

“We just try to, whatever free time we have, we’re doing some volunteering, especially my husband,” she said.

Christina says they haven't told their family in the Philippines yet, they want to keep it a surprise.
