The city government launched Monday the 103rd Charter Day Anniversary celebration come September 1, 2012.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan enjoined all citizens of Baguio, regardless of their tribal origin, to join the celebration and altogether learn from the lessons of history, in line with this year’s theme, “Sustaining a Sense of History, Community and Continuity.”

“Looking back at the annals of history, the city was able to tackle many challenges. Let us continue to sustain the teamwork and unity. Let us help one another, collectively and individually, on how we can contribute to the sustainability of development and camaraderie, as one family,” Domogan stressed.

On September 1, there will be a Charter Day parade to be followed by a program at the Baguio Convention Center, highlighted by the awarding of the Outstanding Citizens of Baguio. Invited guest of honor is Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

In the same venue, a Unity Ball is also scheduled at 6 p.m.

The city government, through the Public Employment Service Office, in coordination with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), will also hold a Baguio Day Job and Livelihood Fair at the Baguio Convention Center on September 26 and 27.

Other scheduled activities include: Baguio Day Sister Cities Exhibit at Malcolm Square on September 5 to 7; the 2012 Character City Week which will start on Sept. 17; Character City Parade of 100 Umbrellas on Sept. 18; Concert at the Park on Sept. 21 at Sunshine Park and the annual Search for Miss Baguio.

For sports event, there will be the Baguio Day Bowling at Olympian Lanes on Aug. 26; Baguio Bike Fest at Camp John Hay Trails on Sept. 1 to 2; BAHAG Tennis Ethnic Tournament at the Athletic Bowl on Sept. 1; BAHAG – Airsoft Speedball Tournament also at the Athletic Bowl on Sept. 8 and the Mister Baguio at the Baguio Convention Center on Sept. 22.

Coinciding with the celebration is the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Baguio's Hotel Restaurant and Tourism Weekend 2012 on September 6 to 8, which will feature the biggest culinary competitions in north Philippines. This will showcase the “Largest Wedding Cake” on Sept. 6 at the SM City Baguio Atrium.

Baguio City was established by Americans in 1900 at the site of an Ibaloi village known as Kafagway.

The name of the city is derived from the word "bagiw" in Ibaloi, the indigenous language of the Benguet people, meaning "moss." It was incorporated as a chartered city on September 1, 1909.(JDP/CCD-PIA CAR)
