What was once a dark tunnel leading to EDSA and Pioneer, Mandaluyong City, is now a safe, brightened path to drive through.

On 15 May, President Benigno Aquino III shall lead the inaugural ceremony of the Boni Tunnel Efficient Lighting System, which aims to transform the existing sub-standard lighting system of the Boni Tunnel to an energy efficient lighting using the solar-powered light emitting diodes or LED.

The Boni tunnel was considered dangerous by motorists because of its inadequate lighting.

The Boni Tunnel Efficient Lighting System is a public-private partnership (PPP) project implemented by the Department of Energy (DOE). Other agencies involved are the Department of Public Works and Highways, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, local government of Mandaluyong City, Philippine National Oil Company-Renewablesh Corporation, Philips, and the Asian Development Bank partnered with the DOE to make the said project possible.

According to DOE, the Boni Tunnel will be illuminated at daytime using the solar panel. At night time, the power source will switch to the grid. Thus, DOE said, the project may save the Mandaluyong City government P240,000 per year in electricity expenditure.

The LED technology used in the tunnel is envisioned to be the model system for lighting other tunnels across the country. (PCCC/PIA-Central)
