The Department of Agriculture (DA) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) have agreed to pursue, promote and enter into scientific and technical cooperation in the field of postharvest and agricultural mechanization, a statement said.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala and Science and Technology Secretary Mario G. Montejo signed a memorandum of understanding on this technical cooperation.

The agreement includes the sharing of manpower and financial resources, and co-sponsorships of training, symposia and seminars.

The specific areas of cooperation include the agricultural engineering, postharvest pest and disease management, mycotoxin prevention and food safety, food processing, agricultural economics and agri-business management, and biotechnology.

One of DA agencies that will be primarily involved on this MOU is the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech), which is already a DOST partner.

“PHilMech and agencies under the DOST like the ITDI have already undertaken successful research like the production of food grade pectin from mango peels at a lower cost compared to imported pectin made from apple peels,” said Rex L. Bingabing, engineer and PHilMech director.

PHilMech, together with its mother agency and the DOST believe that the collaboration would speed up the generation and commercialization of new technologies, facilities, implements and systems for the agriculture and industry sector. (DA/RJB/JCP-PIA NCR)
