The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is now preparing for the aftermath of typhoon “Helen” amidst relief operations for victims of flood caused by the recent southwest monsoon rains.

In a press statement, Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman said that DSWD regional offices along the path of Helen have pre-positioned P500,000 standby funds and 2,000 family packs worth P1 million ready for distribution to affected LGUs.

The DSWD National Resource Operations Center (NROC) in Pasay has to date 156,980 food packs for victims of disasters.
As of 8:00 a.m. yesterday, August 14, a total of P41.6-million worth of food and non-food assistance had already been released by the department to families affected by floods.

Meanwhile, repacking continues by more than 3,000 volunteers comprising of students, non-government organizations (NGOs), people’s organizations (POs), faith-based organizations, private companies and families from the different areas in Metro Manila registered at NROC.

To ensure the orderly distribution of relief goods and prevent duplication on services provided, affected families will be provided with Disaster Assistance Family Access Cards (DAFAC), designed by DSWD and issued by the LGUs that will entitle families to relief assistance.

To date, the DSWD is still attending to 57,730 families with 260,484 persons temporarily sheltered in 698 evacuation centers.

Provision of hot meals are made possible through the establishment of community kitchens in different evacuation centers.

In Region III, community kitchens were set up in 10 evacuation centers in Balanga and Hermosa in Bataan; and Norzagaray, Baliwag, Obando and Plaridel in Bulacan.

“The DSWD Disaster Teams in all affected regions will continue to operate 24/7 and to coordinate with affected LGUs to ensure immediate assistance in relief distribution, data generation, and management of evacuation centers,” Secretary Soliman stressed. (LFB/RJB-PIA-NCR /DSWD)
