The Department of Energy (DOE) called on the public to check the energy labels of appliances, particularly televisions, to help save energy and to help alleviate the adverse effects of climate change.

The DOE launched yesterday the “Watts Out! TV Olympics” at the SM Megamall Atrium in Mandaluyong City, to showcase the most energy efficient technologies available in the local television market.

According to DOE Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras, the US Central Intelligence Agency World Factbook reported that the Philippines, in 2003, ranked as the 40th country with the most number of households owning color television sets.

“There were 39 other countries who own more television sets than us. That [figure] was in 2003. I think that today there’s a lot more,” said Almendras.

Almendras further said many countries have already shifted to energy-efficient televisions and some old models have been imported to the Philippines.

“These may be very affordable, but when you look at your electric bill, it will cost you more in the long run. It will be better to buy something a little bit expensive, but you will save more,” Almendras added.

“Watts Out! TV Olympics will run for seven days starting August 16 to 22.

Devant, Haier, Hyundai, Konka, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, TCL and Toshiba are participating in the event to display their most energy-efficient cold cathode fluorescent lamps and light-emitting diode backlit Liquid-crystal display models. Power consumption of each television is monitored in the said event. (PCCC-PIA-Central)
