The small-scale fishpond operators here are showcasing the sustained “tilanggit” production project which was introduced by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).Tilanggit are dried small tilapia.
In the recent monitoring of the Project Monitoring Committee, Evangeline Arugay of NEDA said the project was not just sustaining but also growing as fishpond operators were able to increase their tilapia production for tilanggit that is now in-demand in the market.
In 2007, the project was conceptualized when fishpond operators noticed that many fish in the pond did not grow bigger and were not competitive to the bigger tilapia demanded by market.
In its four years of implementation, the beneficiaries were able to study how to produce more tilapia fingerlings and to process the small tilapia into tilanggit.
“They can produce up to 250 kilos tilapia stock and sold at P10,000, thus providing income to fishpond operators,” Arugay said.
She further mentioned that the project is very significant to operators as they were motivated to process the tilapia fingerlings instead of disposing them for free.
At present, the group is now expanding their production and sales not only in the province but also regionwide and even in other parts of the country.
To further extend assistance to the group, the Department of Agriculture gave them a mechanical dryer which can be used for indoor drying and to enable to process tilanggit even during rainy days. (OTB-PIA, 2)
funded through the Kennedy Round 2 (KR2) productivity enhancement program.
