The Department of Health (DOH)-10, has reiterated its call to local government units (LGUs) to intensify their campaign in the fight against dengue, one of which is the reactivation of the Barangay Dengue Brigade.

This, after the Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit (RESDRU) of DOH-10 reported at least 16 deaths due to dengue in the region, as of Aug. 17, this year.

Thirteen or 81 percent of the deaths came from Misamis Oriental while three came from Bukidnon, Dr. Jaime Bernadas, regional director of DOH-10, said.

“The 4S method is still the best way to fight dengue, i.e., search and destroy mosquito breeding sites, seek early consultation when ill, use self protection and say no to indiscriminate fogging,” Bernadas said.

He said self-protection can be done with the use of long-sleeves and pants or other protective clothing and other repellants and by screening of doors and windows.

Meanwhile, the RESDRU also showed that 3,209 dengue cases had been admitted to different sentinel hospitals in the region, from Jan. 1 to Aug. 17.

Compared to last year’s data of 1,261 cases, for the same period, this year’s number represented an increase of 154.48 percent, Dr. David Mendoza, head of the RESDRU, said.

By area, the highest number of 2,405 cases or 75 percent came from Misamis Oriental, followed by Bukidnon with 426 cases or 13.30 percent, Lanao del Norte with 254 cases or 7.90 percent, Misamis Occidental with 112 cases or 3.50 percent and lowest in Camiguin with 11 cases or 0.30 percent.

Among the cities, Cagayan de Oro has the highest number of 1,760 cases or 54.80 percent, followed by Iligan City with 176 cases or 5.50 percent and Valencia City with 93 cases or 2.90 percent.

Again, only the three cities of Misamis Occidental posted negative in the number of dengue cases during the period: Tangub, Ozamiz and Oroquieta, with -83.87 percent, -74.81 percent and -28.57 percent, respectively.

As monitored by the RESDRU, a total of 55 barangays of the region had more than three dengue cases in the past four weeks.

About 28 of these barangays were in Cagayan de Oro City, namely: Agusan, Balulang, Bayabas, Barangy 12, Barangay 18, Bayabas, Bonbon, Bugo, Bulua, Camaman-an,Canitoan, Carmen, Cugman, Dansolihon, Gusa, Indahag, Iponan, Kauswagan and Lapasan,
Lumbia, Macabalan, Macasandig, Nazareth, Patag, Pagatpat, Puerto, Puntod and Tablon.

Seventeen of the barangays were in Misamis Oriental, particularly, the Poblacion Barangays of Claveria, El Salvador City, Initao, Jasaan, Opol, Salay, Tagoloan, Talisayan and Villanueva and Barangay Aplaya and Lower Jasaan in Jasaan, Barra and Igpit in Opol, Natomulan, Rosario, Sta. Ana and Sta. Cruz in Tagoloan ang Punta Silum in Manticao.

The other barangays were Poblacion, Damilag and Mambatangan in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon and Poblacion, Batangan, Lumbo and Lurugan in Valencia City and Barangays Mahayahay and Tubod in Iligan City and Barangay Tugar in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte. (RCA/PIA-Misamis Occidental)
